Day 163: Rainy Day

"I was in love with the whole world and all that lived in its rainy arms."
-Louise Erdrich

"One rainy Sunday when I was in third grade, I picked up a book to look at the pictures and discovered that even though I did not want to, I was reading. I have been a reader ever since."
-Beverly Cleary

"Never count your friends on sunny days for they will all be around, count your friends on rainy days when the clouds are gray, and lightning shakes the ground, it is then you painfully see the kind of friend they really are, when life delivers a sharp blow do they stay and try to heal the scar?"

I love rainy Sundays! And I love quotes about rainy Sundays. The weather here is really making me wish I had the time to curl up in some sweatpants with a good book.

Day 162: Monoliths

"Society is one vast conspiracy for carving one into the kind of statue it likes, and then placing it in the most convenient niche it has."
-Randolph Bourne

I could have sworn that I hit the "publish" button before I closed the window for my post for yesterday. But obviously something went wrong because I went on this morning and it wasn't there. Oops. So the last post was done yesterday. And this is today's post, done completely in pastels. I really wanted to use some color.

Day 159: Another portrait

I wasn't feeling very inspired to draw anything creative today, so I just did another portrait. I realize it's boring...

Tuesday, April 17, 2012

Day 158: Crown of Flowers

"Earth laughs in flowers."
-Ralph Waldo Emerson

"I'd rather have diamonds on my table than diamonds on my neck."
-Emma Goldman

"When you have only two pennies left in the world, buy a loaf of bread with one, and a lily with the other."
-Chinese Proverb

"Flowers whisper 'Beauty!' to the world, even as they fade, wilt, fall."
-Dr. Sunwolf

Drawing flowers with pastels is a lot of fun! And since it's spring I figure it's the perfect time to draw a lot of them.

Day 157: Fountain

"Few people know so clearly what they want. Most people can't even think what to hope for when they throw a penny in a fountain."
-Barbara Kingsolver

Despite the fact that some of my favorite sketches are ones that I just scribble down in about 20 minutes, when I feel like I'm rushing, I'm never happy with what I draw. And Mondays are always super busy for me. And I'm not a huge fan of this sketch.

Day 156

I have a pretty busy day and just had time for a quick sketch today. I know this is boring, but it's all I have time for.

Saturday, April 14, 2012

Day 155: Clown

"Time is a circus, always packing up and moving away."
-Ben Hecht

Friday, April 13, 2012

Day 154: The Dawn

"A dreamer is one who only makes his way by moonlight, and his punishment is that he sees the dawn before the rest of the world."
-Oscar Wilde

Thursday, April 12, 2012

Day 153: Braid

"You make me smile all over my face."
-Ian Hobson, age 5

My recent obsession with pastels continues...the only downside of them is that they're very messy. Messy pastels + messy person = double mess. A pretty, colorful mess, but a mess all the same. It's a good thing that the carpet of my room is a very dark color. (Also, the quote is just something I found on the internet that I thought was adorable, not by somebody I know.)

Day 152: Mime

"'I don't think...' 'Then you shouldn't talk,' said the Hatter."
-Lewis Caroll, Alice in Wonderland

Day 148: Happy Easter

"Easter spells out beauty, the rare beauty of new life."
-S.D. Gordon

I know Easter isn't until tomorrow, but I wanted to draw this today and I felt it fit into the atmosphere of Easter.

Day 147: Zooey Deschanel

"Always the aim for me is making people feel like they are not alone. That's just the greatest feeling."

"Certain aspect of my personality are always going to come out on-screen. I guess that's just me- if they say I'm quirky, I'm quirky. It's better than being boring."

"I just sort of follow my bliss, so to speak, and then I see where it takes me."

"I'm always trying to do things I haven't done before or challenge myself so I'm not resting on my laurels all of the time because if I just found my little niche and never left it, I'd be pretty boring, I think."

"You can't expect to make to effort. You still have to make the effort and be kind and understanding."

-Zooey Deschanel

Day 146: View

"If eyes were made for seeing, then beauty is its own excuse for being."
-Ralph Waldo Emerson

"Like tourists huffing and puffing to reach the peak we forget the view on the way up."
-Friedrich Neitzche

I was looking around on the internet recently for photos that inspire me, and this is one of the photos that I found that I really liked. I usually feel like my drawing come out better when I have some sort of inspiration, not just sketching for the sake of it. I like the way this one came out. I used pastels for the color in the glasses.

Day 145: Morning

"If people were meant to pop out of bed, we'd all sleep in toasters."
-Author unknown, attributed to Jim Davis

"I'll tell you how the sun rose a ribbon at a time."
-Emily Dickinson

Day 144: Forgot Again

Here's the drawing I did yesterday...which I forgot to post AGAIN! Recently I forgot to post once, and then almost forgot a second time until my mom reminded me. I've been so forgetful lately! I really need to sleep more. Today's drawing has not been drawn yet...but once it is I will not forget to post again.

Day 143: Poem

"Re-examine all you have been told at school or church or in any book, dismiss what insults your own soul, and your very flesh shall be a great poem."
-Walt Whitman

I've been feeling pretty sick all day and wasn't feeling terribly creative. It was nice to actually have a little bit of time to do something at least slightly more than a scribble, however.

Day 141: Plotting Evil

"So far as we are human, what we do must either be evil or good: so far as we do evil or good, we are human: and it is better, in a paradoxical way, to do evil than to do nothing: at least we exist."
-T.S. Eliot

On days like today I kind of regret committing to drawing something every day. I didn't have time to do anything good, so now I have to post this drawing...and it's just kind of embarrassing since I know it's terrible.

Day 140: You Picked Me

"You got me, searched the sand
And climed the tree
And pulled me back down.

And all I can say
is you blow me away."

-A Fine Frenzy, "You Picked Me"

My drawing today is based on the album cover that this song is on (One Cell in the Sea).

Day 139: Love and Laughter

"Laugh as much a your breathe and love as long as you live."

I realize this is pretty similar to what I drew yesterday....but I figured it was okay considering this week's theme is love.

Wednesday, March 28, 2012

Day 138: Cuddle

"Come, cuddle your head on my shoulder, dear,
Your head like the golden-rod,
And we will go sailing away from here,
To the beautiful land of Nod."
-Ella Wheeler Wilcox

II finally drew a picture that fit this week's theme (love)!

Day 137: Love

"Since love grows within you, so beauty grows. For love is the beauty of the soul."
-St. Aurelius Augustine

This quote doesn't really go the with drawing, it's just to match this week's theme (love...which I haven't been sticking to so far).
I'm a little frustrated that I forgot to publish this post before midnight...I had it ready by about 8pm but I guess I never actually pressed the publish post button. But I promise, I did draw it yesterday, I just forgot to post it. oops.

Monday, March 26, 2012

Day 136: Blue Eye Shadow

"The first rule of makeup is that you can never have enough blue eye shadow."
-Jamie Lee Curtis as Shelly in My Girl

Sunday, March 25, 2012

Day 135: Old Hollywood Glamour

"Glamour is what makes a man ask for your telephone number. But it also is what makes a woman ask for the name of your dressmaker."
-Lilly Dache

"Romance is the glamour which turns the dust of everyday life into a golden haze."
-Amanda Cross

Saturday, March 24, 2012

Day 134: Just some lame doodles

I didn't have time to really draw anything today, so I just doodled for a bit. I also didn't want to go all the way back to my room to use the scanner, so I just used my phone to take a picture. Totally boring... I know.

Thursday, March 22, 2012

Day 132: First Flower

"A flower cannot blossom without sunshine, and man cannot live without love."
-Max Muller

My mom sent me a picture today of the first flower to bloom in the garden at home...hence this drawing. It's done entirely in pastels this time.

Wednesday, March 21, 2012

Day 131:

"Remember that at any given moment there are a thousand things you can love."
-David Leithan

Today's sketch is a little different because I drew it completely out of my head. Usually I search around for a photo that inspires me, and base my sketch off of that. But today I just drew something that I had in my head. Usually when I try that it's pretty miserable, but it came out mostly as I imagined it today, so I guess that's a plus!

Tuesday, March 20, 2012

Day 130: Sleeping

"The bed is a bundle of paradoxes: we go to it with reluctance, yet we quit it with regret; we make up our minds every night to leave it early, but we make up our bodies every morning to keep it late."
-Charles Caleb Colton

This quote could not be more true! I think this is the reason that I dread sleeping so much; the whole process is such a tease! Anyways, I only spent a few minutes drawing a quick sketch of something that I sketch all the time...but at least I've done something.

Monday, March 19, 2012

Day 129: Standing Still

"All I want is to stand in a field
and to smell green,
to taste air,
to feel the earth want me,
Without all this concrete
hating me."
-Phillip Pulfrey

I can't remember if I've said it yet this week, but this week's theme is standing still. I used pencil and pastlels for today's drawing. I've been trying to practice with drawing entire bodies rather than just faces lately.

Sunday, March 18, 2012

Day 128: Eyes Open

"He who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe is as good as dead; his eyes are closed."
-Albert Einstein

I guess I just felt like playing with the pastels today...

Saturday, March 17, 2012

Day 127: Spring

"I love spring anywhere, but if I could choose I would always greet it in a garden."
-Ruth Stout

Thursday, March 15, 2012

Day 125: Dress-up

"The finest clothing is a person's skin, but, of course, society demands something more than this."
-Mark Twain

Wednesday, March 14, 2012

Day 124: Capturing Time

"Human vision is untrustworthy, subjective, and selective. Camera vision is total and non-objective."
-Andreas Feininger

Tuesday, March 13, 2012

Day 123: Blow a Kiss

Blow a kiss into the air, for it will find the lips that care.

I had some fun playing with pastels again today!

Monday, March 12, 2012

Day 122: Colors of the Wind

"Can you sing with all the voices of the mountain? Can you paint with all the colors of the wind?"
-Disney's Pocahontas

It seem that I've basically turned the theme for this week into just plain "wind". I tried using my pastels for the first time today. It was really fun, they blend so easily!

Sunday, March 11, 2012

Day 121: Wind

"And forget not that the earth delights to feel your bare feet and the winds long to play with your hair."
-Kahlil Gibran, The Prophet

This week's theme (it started yesterday) is whirlwind speed. I got frustrated with today's because I couldn't get the eyes to focus for some reason, so I just rushed through the rest of it...although I guess that fits with the theme at least!

Saturday, March 10, 2012

Day 120: Black Hole

"Why is it that of all the billions and billions of strange objects in the Cosmos- novas, quasars, pulsars, black holes- you are beyond a doubt the strangest?"
-Walter Percy

Friday, March 9, 2012

Day 119: Glory of the Stars

"There is one glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars: for one star differeth from another star in glory."
-1 Corinthians 15:41

Today, I just really wanted to use some color in my sketch. So I sketched the woman in the center first, and then just played with some kids' Crayola, washable watercolors on the outside of the image. I haven't used watercolors in such a long time! I have real artists' watercolors, but I have yet to actually learn how to use those. I want to practice with those at some time when I have the amount of time available that's necessary for that task.

Thursday, March 8, 2012

Day 118: Janis Joplin

"I'm one of those regular weird people."
-Janis Joplin

I drew this drawing as a project for requested by my dad, he wanted me to draw a picture of Janis Joplin with Monique, a woman that he works with, as if they're friends.

Wednesday, March 7, 2012

Day 117: Kiss

"How I miss you and I just wanna kiss you,
And I'm gonna love you till my dying day."
-Brandi Carlile, "Dying Day"

Tuesday, March 6, 2012

Day 116: Neus

"I don't want life to imitate art. I want life to be art."
-Ernst Fischer

Monday, March 5, 2012

Day 115: Fortune

"To attract good fortune, spend a new penny on an old friend, share an old pleasure with a new friend, and lift up the heart of a true friend by writing his names on the wings of a dragon."
-Proverb

Sunday, March 4, 2012

Day 114: Anther Mask

"Although I know it's not fair, I reveal myself one mask at a time."
-Stephen Dunn
