Day 141: Plotting Evil

"So far as we are human, what we do must either be evil or good: so far as we do evil or good, we are human: and it is better, in a paradoxical way, to do evil than to do nothing: at least we exist."
-T.S. Eliot

On days like today I kind of regret committing to drawing something every day. I didn't have time to do anything good, so now I have to post this drawing...and it's just kind of embarrassing since I know it's terrible.

Day 140: You Picked Me

"You got me, searched the sand
And climed the tree
And pulled me back down.

And all I can say
is you blow me away."

-A Fine Frenzy, "You Picked Me"

My drawing today is based on the album cover that this song is on (One Cell in the Sea).

Day 139: Love and Laughter

"Laugh as much a your breathe and love as long as you live."

I realize this is pretty similar to what I drew yesterday....but I figured it was okay considering this week's theme is love.

Day 138: Cuddle

"Come, cuddle your head on my shoulder, dear,
Your head like the golden-rod,
And we will go sailing away from here,
To the beautiful land of Nod."
-Ella Wheeler Wilcox

II finally drew a picture that fit this week's theme (love)!

Day 137: Love

"Since love grows within you, so beauty grows. For love is the beauty of the soul."
-St. Aurelius Augustine

This quote doesn't really go the with drawing, it's just to match this week's theme (love...which I haven't been sticking to so far).
I'm a little frustrated that I forgot to publish this post before midnight...I had it ready by about 8pm but I guess I never actually pressed the publish post button. But I promise, I did draw it yesterday, I just forgot to post it. oops.

Day 136: Blue Eye Shadow

"The first rule of makeup is that you can never have enough blue eye shadow."
-Jamie Lee Curtis as Shelly in My Girl

Day 135: Old Hollywood Glamour

"Glamour is what makes a man ask for your telephone number. But it also is what makes a woman ask for the name of your dressmaker."
-Lilly Dache

"Romance is the glamour which turns the dust of everyday life into a golden haze."
-Amanda Cross

Day 134: Just some lame doodles

I didn't have time to really draw anything today, so I just doodled for a bit. I also didn't want to go all the way back to my room to use the scanner, so I just used my phone to take a picture. Totally boring... I know.

Day 132: First Flower

"A flower cannot blossom without sunshine, and man cannot live without love."
-Max Muller

My mom sent me a picture today of the first flower to bloom in the garden at home...hence this drawing. It's done entirely in pastels this time.

Day 131:

"Remember that at any given moment there are a thousand things you can love."
-David Leithan

Today's sketch is a little different because I drew it completely out of my head. Usually I search around for a photo that inspires me, and base my sketch off of that. But today I just drew something that I had in my head. Usually when I try that it's pretty miserable, but it came out mostly as I imagined it today, so I guess that's a plus!

Day 130: Sleeping

"The bed is a bundle of paradoxes: we go to it with reluctance, yet we quit it with regret; we make up our minds every night to leave it early, but we make up our bodies every morning to keep it late."
-Charles Caleb Colton

This quote could not be more true! I think this is the reason that I dread sleeping so much; the whole process is such a tease! Anyways, I only spent a few minutes drawing a quick sketch of something that I sketch all the time...but at least I've done something.

Day 129: Standing Still

"All I want is to stand in a field
and to smell green,
to taste air,
to feel the earth want me,
Without all this concrete
hating me."
-Phillip Pulfrey

I can't remember if I've said it yet this week, but this week's theme is standing still. I used pencil and pastlels for today's drawing. I've been trying to practice with drawing entire bodies rather than just faces lately.

Day 128: Eyes Open

"He who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe is as good as dead; his eyes are closed."
-Albert Einstein

I guess I just felt like playing with the pastels today...

Saturday, March 17, 2012

Day 127: Spring

"I love spring anywhere, but if I could choose I would always greet it in a garden."
-Ruth Stout

Thursday, March 15, 2012

Day 125: Dress-up

"The finest clothing is a person's skin, but, of course, society demands something more than this."
-Mark Twain

Wednesday, March 14, 2012

Day 124: Capturing Time

"Human vision is untrustworthy, subjective, and selective. Camera vision is total and non-objective."
-Andreas Feininger

Tuesday, March 13, 2012

Day 123: Blow a Kiss

Blow a kiss into the air, for it will find the lips that care.

I had some fun playing with pastels again today!

Monday, March 12, 2012

Day 122: Colors of the Wind

"Can you sing with all the voices of the mountain? Can you paint with all the colors of the wind?"
-Disney's Pocahontas

It seem that I've basically turned the theme for this week into just plain "wind". I tried using my pastels for the first time today. It was really fun, they blend so easily!

Sunday, March 11, 2012

Day 121: Wind

"And forget not that the earth delights to feel your bare feet and the winds long to play with your hair."
-Kahlil Gibran, The Prophet

This week's theme (it started yesterday) is whirlwind speed. I got frustrated with today's because I couldn't get the eyes to focus for some reason, so I just rushed through the rest of it...although I guess that fits with the theme at least!

Day 120: Black Hole

"Why is it that of all the billions and billions of strange objects in the Cosmos- novas, quasars, pulsars, black holes- you are beyond a doubt the strangest?"
-Walter Percy

Day 119: Glory of the Stars

"There is one glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars: for one star differeth from another star in glory."
-1 Corinthians 15:41

Today, I just really wanted to use some color in my sketch. So I sketched the woman in the center first, and then just played with some kids' Crayola, washable watercolors on the outside of the image. I haven't used watercolors in such a long time! I have real artists' watercolors, but I have yet to actually learn how to use those. I want to practice with those at some time when I have the amount of time available that's necessary for that task.

Day 118: Janis Joplin

"I'm one of those regular weird people."
-Janis Joplin

I drew this drawing as a project for requested by my dad, he wanted me to draw a picture of Janis Joplin with Monique, a woman that he works with, as if they're friends.

Day 117: Kiss

"How I miss you and I just wanna kiss you,
And I'm gonna love you till my dying day."
-Brandi Carlile, "Dying Day"

Tuesday, March 6, 2012

Day 116: Neus

"I don't want life to imitate art. I want life to be art."
-Ernst Fischer

Monday, March 5, 2012

Day 115: Fortune

"To attract good fortune, spend a new penny on an old friend, share an old pleasure with a new friend, and lift up the heart of a true friend by writing his names on the wings of a dragon."
-Proverb

Sunday, March 4, 2012

Day 114: Anther Mask

"Although I know it's not fair, I reveal myself one mask at a time."
-Stephen Dunn

Saturday, March 3, 2012

Day 113: Hat

"I myself have 12 hats, and each one represents a different personality. Why just be yourself?"
-Margaret Atwood

Friday, March 2, 2012

Day 112

"I am always doing that which I cannot do, in order that I may learn how to do it."
-Pablo Picasso

Thursday, March 1, 2012

Day 111: Wink

"Maybe that's what life is... a wink of the eye and winking stars."
-Jack Keroac

Wednesday, February 29, 2012

Day 110: Self-Doubt

"Nobody can make you feel inferior without your consent."
-Eleanor Roosevelt

Tuesday, February 28, 2012

Day 109: Protector

"If you've got a talent, protect it."
-Jim Carrey

I started this sketch when I didn't have my sketchpad or pencils with me, so I just drew this one on regular printer paper, mostly with a mechanical pencil. I did finish it bu doing the hair and clothes with one of my sketching pencils, however. A mechanical pencil is so thin that doing something like hair takes sooooo long!

Day 108: Warrior

"When life is victorious, there is birth. When life is thwarted, there is death. A warrior is always engaged in a life-and-death struggle for peace."
-Morihei Ueshiba

Sunday, February 26, 2012

Day 107: Tears

"I often see how you sob over what you destroy, how you want to stop and just worship, and you do stop, and then a moment later you are at it again with a knife, like a surgeon."
-Anais Nin

Saturday, February 25, 2012

Day 106: Smoke

"There are seeds of self-destruction in all of us that will bear only unhappiness if allowed to grow."
-Dorothea Brande

This week's theme is destruction. So today I drew something that everybody knows is self destructive: smoking a cigarette.

Day 104:

"We cannot change our memories, but we can change their meaning and the power they have over us."
-David Seamans

Wednesday, February 22, 2012

Day 103:

"The person who says something is impossible should not interrupt the person who is doing it."

Tuesday, February 21, 2012

Day 102: Relfection

"It's important to be heroic, ambitious, productive, efficient, creative, and progressive, but these qualities don't necessarily nurture the soul. The soul has different concerns, of equal value: downtime for reflection, conversation, and reverie; beauty that is captivating and pleasuring; relatedness to the environs and to people; and any animal's rhythm of rest and activity."
-Thomas Moore

Monday, February 20, 2012

Day 101: Stare

"We all have our time machines. Some take us back, they're called memories. Some take us forward, they're called dreams."
-Jeremy Irons

I know the drawing today has nothing to do with they week's theme...but at least the quote does!

Sunday, February 19, 2012

Day 100: Marilyn

"I am selfish, impatient, and a little insecure. I make mistakes, I am out of control and at times hard to handle. But if you can't handle me at my worst, you sure as hell don't deserve me at my best."
-Marilyn Monroe

I don't know much about Marilyn Monroe, besides the fact that she's an American icon, but I stumbled up this quote (on StumbleUpon) and I know I said this about the quote I used yesterday, but I really really love this quote! I've been reading other quotes by Marilyn, and she said some really great things! I had no idea! It makes me want to read more about her.

Here are some other Marilyn Monroe quotes that I love:

"I believe that everything happens for a reason. People change so that you can learn to let go, things go wrong so that you can appreciate them when they're right, you believe lies so you eventually learn to trust no one but yourself, and sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together."

"Imperfection is beauty, madness is genius and it's better to be absolutely ridiculous than absolutely boring."

"If you're gonna be two-faced, at least make one of them pretty."

"The real lover is the man who can thrill you by kissing your forehead or smiling into your eyes or just staring into space."

"When it comes down to it, I let them think what they want. If they care enough to bother with what I do, then I'm already better than them."

"Give a girl the right shoes, and she can conquer the world."

"Beneath the makeup and behind the smile I'm just a girl who wishes for the world."

"Women who seek to be equal with men lack ambition." (I love this one!)

...and I don't have time to type any more right now, but there are soooo many! I never knew she was so witty and wise and clever!

Day 99: Memories

"God gave us memories that we might have roses in December."
-J.M. Barrie, Courage, 1922

Today is the first day of a new week, and this week's theme is memory. I didn't choose a picture that really fit into that category, but I did choose a quote that fit the theme. I think this is one of my favorite quotes that I've found so far; I think it's very beautiful.

Day 98: Flower

"Give me a flower without a name
Give me an unknown, too tall untamed
I'll give you the tree that I finally found
Roots, roots in the air, branches in the ground."
-Lia Ices, "Grown Unknown"

I wasn't sure what I wanted to draw today, but then I saw this photo when I was searching around online and loved it so much I decided I needed to draw it today! (The model's name is Andrej Pejic...and is actually a very androgynous male!) The photo immediately reminded me of the song "Grown Unknown" by Lia Ices, probably because on last season of So You Think You Can Dance, Justin Giles choreographed a group dance to this song featuring a huge flower as a prop. The mood of the song also reminds me a lot of the mood of the photo (which I hope I at least somewhat captured in the drawing).
I've never been able to tell exactly what the lyrics to the song are, though. They're pretty difficult to understand. And when I looked up the lyrics, I noticed that the cover of the album with this song on it is Lia Ices with a flower in her mouth, very similar to the photo I drew!

It must be fate :)

Day 97: Nightmare

"Nightmares exist outside of logic, and there's little fun to be had in explanations; they're antithetical to the poetry of fear."
-Stephen King

Wednesday, February 15, 2012

Day 96: Flying

"Aerodynamically, the bumble bee shouldn't be able to fly, but the bumble bee doesn't know it do it so it goes flying anyway."
-Mary Kay Ash

Today, I did a drawing about my dream superpower: the ability to fly. I've had dreams where I can pump my arms and start flying. I really wish I could do that while I was awake as well!

Tuesday, February 14, 2012

Day 95: Dreaming in Color

"Don't wake me cause I'm dreaming in color, black and white is not my friend.
Candy coated figures hold me in my bed."
-Erin McCarley, "Gotta Figure this Out"

Monday, February 13, 2012

Day 94: Daydream

"A daydream is a meal at which images are eaten. Some of us are gourmets, some gourmands, and a good many take their images precooked out of a can and swallow them down whole, absent-mindedly, and with little relish."
-W.H. Auden

"I was sitting to daydream, but my mind kept wandering."
-Steven Wright

"I live my daydreams in music."
-Albert Einstein

"Thought is the labor of the intellect, reverie is its pleasure."
-Victor Hugo

Day 93: Dream Job

"Go humanity!"
-Dr. Camille Saroyan, "Bones"

This week's theme is dream, so today I decided to draw the character on Bones with my dream job (a forensic pathologist), Dr. Camille (Cam) Saroyan.
